CHAPTER FIVE

The Angel's Offer

catThe cat heard the voice of the angel as he climbed out of the bush. "You are full of grace," the angel said. "God is with you." Then the cat climbed to the window and saw the angel change his form to become a 10-year-old boy. The little boy moved quickly on his toes and stood in front of Mary.

Meanwhile, Mary knelt on the floor behind a table to give a dish of milk to the cat. She peeked at the angel over the table. Still dressed as a boy, the angel peeked over the other side of the table at her.

In an excited voice he quickly said, "You are God's special person, so He has chosen you to bear his son, to give birth to His child, who will be the greatest man who has ever lived. He will be the long-awaited Prince of Peace. He will be the favored one of God."

Chapter 5The angel's message caught Mary off guard. For the first time she looked worried, but the little boy gallantly reached to his shoulder and, whisk! he turned the flowers into one perfect rose, which he laid on the table before Mary's eyes.

"Do not be afraid," he said.

Mary laughed. To the cat she seemed less like one afraid and more like someone wondering what she had gotten herself into. She stood up and sat on a chair on her side of the table. She smiled at the little boy, looked him in the eyes, and asked, "How will this be done?"

In a flash the angel became an old man dressed like a Jewish master of the law. Sitting on the chair opposite Mary, he replied, "The Holy Spirit will come to you and you will receive the Son of the Most Loving God." Mary looked across the table at the angel and asked, "Is this all you have to say?" In response, the angelic old man asked, "Do you accept?"

Mary reached for the rose. As she picked it up, she said, "I am the servant of God. Be it done unto me as He wills."

As she said this there was a bright flash and the rose became gold. The flash caught the cat by surprise and again he fell out the window. He fell into a deep sleep beside the saints on the cave floor.

"Mayawn," he said as he curled up into a furry ball.
